Volunteers are important to YES. They help to support students and enable us to give individual attention. Some of our volunteers are PGCE students from Bristol University. Volunteers are a great asset to YES and  their feedback is consistently positive.

‘It’s great fun but hard work.’

‘I think being aware of the difficulties adults face in their everyday tasks when they struggle with reading and writing will be useful for me in the future.’

‘Even when I’ve been really tired after a day at school, going to YES has refreshed me.’

‘It will help me with my future work as you get the chance to work with and support such a wide variety of students.’

‘[YES] … is really relaxing, lovely atmosphere. The learners are interesting and getting to know them and their difficulties with literacy is very valuable. A lovely, voluntary placement.’

Other volunteers also help YES in daytime classes at our base and other venues. All volunteers have enhanced DBS checks and undertake training.

Volunteers help students to develop their English and Maths skills and also bring a wealth of life experience and enthusiasm. Some volunteers use this as a stepping stone towards work in this field.
